FERTILIZER
The ICE-EU Robusta coffee price has dropped nearly $1,000 per ton since November 2025, but the fertilizer market is showing mixed signals. Indian urea prices stabilised after last week’s tender closed, ending speculation that had driven strong gains earlier. The tender sought 1.5 million tons for delivery by end-March, with offers exceeding 3 million tons. Middle East producers (priced in the $480s/t FOB, equating to ~$500/t CFR India) are expected to secure a large share, while Iran and China are largely sidelined due to gas shortages and export halts.Urea prices were mostly flat this week as producers became cautious after peak Northern Hemisphere demand passed. US and Brazil prices eased slightly amid slowing demand, though Brazil’s soybean planting may still drive late buying. Ammonium sulphate prices have stabilised around $180–190/t FOB China, with trade quiet due to Chinese New Year and Carnival in Brazil. Ammonium nitrate prices held flat, with wet European weather delaying spring applications.Phosphates remain relatively flat but with a bullish long-term outlook.
Indian DAP is stable in the $680s/t CFR with low seasonal demand. Saudi Arabia sold cargoes to Australia and Latin America, pushing prices higher there. Moroccan OCP is targeting Europe and the Americas, though exports face shipping disruptions from rough seas. The Q1 phos acid contract to India rolled over at $1,290/t. Brazil’s MAP prices hover around $730/t CFR with very low trade volumes, reflecting demand destruction and shifts to alternative phosphates. Foskor increased its MAP price by R600/t to ~R11,900/t due to higher international values and a weaker rand.Potash markets are quiet due to holidays in China and Brazil. Prices held steady, with Brazil at $365–380/t CFR. Optimism remains for late buying as soybean needs are not yet fully covered, and potash’s lower price relative to phosphates supports sales. SE Asia is expected to enter the market strongly from March. The Indian annual potash contract remains unsettled, with expectations of a higher price in March that could lift global values. Durban CFR benchmark sits at $380–390/t, while Zambia’s UCF is tendering for 100,000t of standard MOP via Beira
.General outlook- US-Iran tensions are pushing Brent crude higher (from $67 to nearly $72/bbl), supported by lower US oil inventories. European TTF gas eased to $11.5/MMBtu with milder (wet) weather, while US natural gas sits just above $3/MMBtu. Urea swaps align with seasonal trends but are expected to decline more steeply than current forwards suggest, potentially below $400/t in the next 3–4 months—unless Middle East conflict disrupts flows. MAP swaps continue to strengthen despite weak Brazilian demand, reflecting structural phosphate shortages. The rand has weakened slightly above R16.15/USD amid geopolitical concerns affecting emerging-market currencies.
