Russia's grain industry is in a deepening crisis, with nearly 35,000 farmers bankrupt over the past five years due to export duties, quotas, high input costs, and an uncompetitive environment. Arkady Zloshevskiy of the Russian Grain Union (RGU) highlighted depleted reserves, noting that export duties—initially temporary post-COVID—now generate significant budget revenue (133.9 billion rubles in 2024, projected 187 billion in 2025) amid sanctions and low oil prices, but burden farmers.Brazil’s grain production for the 2024-25 marketing year is projected to reach a record 350.2 million tonnes, surpassing the previous high of 324.36 million tonnes set in 2022-23, according to Conab’s 12th Harvest Survey. This 16% increase (49.1 million tonnes) over 2023-24 is attributed to a 1.9 million hectare expansion in cultivated area (to 81.7 million hectares) and favorable weather.

The South African Reserve Bank's (SARB) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meets this week for its penultimate 2025 session, announcing its decision on September 18 amid divided economist views on whether to hold or cut interest rates. Since starting the easing cycle in September 2024, the MPC has reduced the repo rate by 125 basis points to 7.00% (prime lending rate to 10.50%), with the only hold this year in March due to budget uncertainties and US policy risks under the Trump administration. Inflation has cooled below the 3% midpoint target, enabling cuts, but recent hikes in electricity, utilities, food, and beverages are pushing it upward toward 4.5% by 2026 before returning to 3% by 2027.

Across South Africa, millions of unskilled workers—many toiling in agriculture, construction, or informal sectors—face a bleak future as artificial intelligence (AI) and automation reshape the job market. With unemployment already at a staggering 32.1% and youth joblessness at 45%, the projected loss of up to 44% of low-skill jobs by 2035 could be catastrophic for those without formal education or training. As African governments, including South Africa’s, consider funding Basic Income Grants (BIG) to support an increasingly “unproductive” workforce, the burden may fall on taxpayers and value-adding sectors like agriculture and mining, raising urgent questions about fairness and economic sustainability.
The South African livestock and poultry industry faces various challenges that include animal disease and stock theft, among other issues. The one positive development in recent months has been the notable decline in the feed prices.

Agriculture Packaging Market is anticipated to expand from $10.5 billion in 2024 to $18.8 billion by 2034, growing at a CAGR of approximately 6%.

As the US soybean harvest begins in 2025, market dynamics are driven by factors beyond traditional crop yield concerns, despite favorable weather supporting a potential record-high yield and good-to-excellent crop ratings in the upper 60%.

A Moody's Ratings study published on September 15, 2025, reveals that borrowing costs for governments and businesses in South Africa, Nigeria, and Kenya have risen over the past five years due to policy weaknesses, unfavorable market conditions, and inflation.

Livestock grazing, heavily subsidized on 270 million acres of public lands across 11 western U.S. states, significantly degrades ecosystems and threatens biodiversity. It impacts 14% of federally protected threatened or endangered animals and 33% of protected plants, making it one of the greatest direct threats to imperiled species.

Nampo Cape 2025, held from 10 to 13 September in Bredasdorp, Western Cape, set a new attendance record with 49,326 visitors, up from 45,894 in 2024.

South Africa’s poultry industry has rebounded strongly from the 2023 bird flu outbreaks, which culled over 9.5 million birds and caused billions in losses, with production stabilizing and surging by mid-2025.

South Africa’s barley production has declined due to challenges like unpredictable weather, rising costs, and quality issues (15–20% of crops downgraded to feed barley), leading farmers to switch to lower-risk crops like wheat, oats, or canola, particularly in the Overberg region.

South Africa’s middle class faces mounting financial pressure from rising food prices, municipal rates, taxes, and levies, despite a 0.8% GDP growth in Q2 2025, as reported by Stats SA. Economist Dawie Roodt notes this growth lags behind the 1.5% population growth, insufficient to support economic needs.

Ses afsonderlike uitbrekings is gerapporteer in vyf munisipaliteite

At a Nedbank-sponsored discussion on tariffs and exports at Nampo Cape 2025 in Bredasdorp on September 11, Agri SA CEO Johann Kotzé highlighted the strong relationships built by South African exporters, especially in the Western Cape, as a key asset to mitigate the 30% US import tariff imposed by the Trump administration.

South Africa’s agricultural exporters are being urged to pivot towards non-traditional markets as geopolitical uncertainty and rising protectionism reshape global trade, according to Paul Makube, senior agricultural economist at FNB.
