Pres.
Summary
- Global Climate Tipping Points: Nearly 200 delegates at the Global Tipping Points Conference in Exeter urged world leaders to act urgently to prevent catastrophic climate tipping points, as global warming nears 1.5°C. Risks include collapsing tropical coral reefs (already underway, affecting millions), potential Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) failure threatening food and water security, and Amazon rainforest dieback from climate change and deforestation.
- South Africa’s Tourism Monitors Programme Controversy: The South African Department of Tourism is probing allegations of irregularities in its R174.5 million Tourism Monitors Programme, aimed at improving tourism safety and youth employment. The issue involves a R2.86 million tender awarded to MMC Business Solutions JV Siva Security Services for KwaZulu-Natal’s Ezemvelo Nature Reserve. Initially disqualified for lacking a local office, MMC was reinstated after the requirement was deemed discriminatory, raising concerns of manipulation and favoritism.
- Youth Embrace Agriculture: South African youth are increasingly choosing agriculture as a rewarding career, driven by its potential for food production and economic growth. Supported by education, skills development, and networking through university programs, expos, and initiatives like the Agricultural Youth Fund and Youth in Agriculture and Rural Development (YARD), young farmers are professionalizing the sector, viewing it as a viable business opportunity rather than a last resort.
Opsomming

Outstanding articles of the week. Summary of some news Headlines in the Farming and Agriculture media.
South Africa (06 July 2025) – Favourable weather, better vineyard practices, and a strategic shift toward premium wine styles have delivered one of South Africa’s best harvests in years—1.244 million tons in 2025, up 11% from 2024. Despite a long-term decline in vineyard area, projections from various sector analysts confirm the sector is on a rise and it remains globally competitive. READ MORE
The African National Congress (ANC)maybe remains in denial about the United States’ conditions for normalizing bilateral trade and diplomatic relations, rather opting instead to prioritize business with BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa). This stance stems from the ANC’s unwavering commitment to policies like Black Economic Empowerment (BEE), land reform, and other ideological priorities that conflict with the U.S.’s stipulated terms. Worryingly, the government has not communicated a systematic strategy for dealing with the U.S. tariff fallout. The meeting in Washington that took place in May 2025 was a step in the right direction, but there is a need to roll up one's sleeves and act in a business-unusual manner. READ MORE
Professor Johann Kirsten, the Director of the Bureau for Economic Research at Stellenbosch University said that although the number may look heartening, given that it is close to the 30% target set out in the National Development Plan, the issue of concern is that the state is now a major owner of agricultural land with more than 2.5 million hectares. Farming isn’t your typical 9-to-5 gig. It’s a lifestyle that demands early mornings, late nights, and plenty of time operating machinery or walking the land. That’s where Audiocast shine. They’re hands-free, portable, and don’t care if you’re covered in dirt or steering through a muddy field. Unlike a book or a video, a Audiocast doesn’t ask you to stop what you’re doing—it joins you in the cab, the shed, or wherever the day takes you. And farmers are listening. Surveys suggest that a significant chunk of the agricultural community—some estimates say over a third—tune into ag-related podcasts regularly. Whether it’s catching up on market trends, learning about the latest in soil health, or just hearing a good story from another grower, these audio shows have become a go-to resource.
