What can South Africa learn about land reforms from wider global and historical experiences in the 20th century?

For thousands of years, trees and humans have maintained an intimate connection. It’s therefore not surprising that many tree species were moved around the world, following the footprints of human civilisation.

While many of these indiscriminately affect entire communities or regions, the consequences are not distributed uniformly in communities. Individual and social factors such as gender, age, education, ethnicity, geography and language lead to differential vulnerability and capacity to adapt to the effects of climate change.

The outlook of South Africa’s manufacturing production is subdued owing to the risk of load shedding, uncertain global growth, flat commodity prices and constrained domestic consumer demand.

Smallholder farming has been neglected over the past 25 years of South Africa’s attempt to redistribute land taken away from black people during the apartheid era.
