Canadian importers are at the tail end of the South African table grape import season. In fact, some importers have already seen the last fruit for the season. The season began back in December with the last grapes being seedless red and black varieties.

"The situation at the harbours is very, very bad at the moment and if it continues like this over 21 days we’re going to have a very big problem on our hands,” says Mitchell Brooke, logistics manager at the Citrus Growers’ Association, about the skeletal staffing at South Africa’s harbours that have reduced berthing by over two-thirds.

Recently released data from the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Foodstuffs, Native Produce and Animal By-Products reveal that in the first six months of 2020 China imported approximately 3.64 million tons of fruit with a total value of $6.33 billion, corresponding to an 8% decrease in volume and a 14% increase in value relative to the same period of last year.
