  • Global actions needed to combat fall armyworm

Fighting fall armyworm requires global efforts as the pest could spread to more countries, warn scientists.

Within the past two years, fall armyworm has spread to 44 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, threatening the food security of about 200 million people who depend on maize as a staple food crop, experts say.

  • African countries should turn to lower risk solutions to fight fall armyworm

The caterpillars of the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda), an invasive moth, can potentially feed on over 350 different species of plants. In the Americas it’s known as a serious pest.

  • Africa’s most notorious insects – the bugs that hit agriculture the hardest

The dreaded crop-eating fall armyworm continues to spread across Africa like wildfire. This invasive insect pest, first reported in Africa in early 2016, is in more than 20 African countries including South Sudanand South Africa. Again in 2017 and in 2019.

  • SA drivers can expect fuel price relief in July 2026, but prices will still be much higher than before the U.S.-Iran conflict. Mid-June CEF data shows big over-recoveries: petrol R2.73-R2.77/L and diesel R4.76/L due to lower global product prices. However, relief is cut by the return of the full general fuel levy. Govt cut taxes by R3/L in Apr-May 2026, then R1.50/L in June.
