SA Canegrowers is urgently calling on the government to scrap the sugar tax (introduced in 2018) and implement stronger protection against imported sugar. Between January and September 2025, South Africa imported 153,344 tons of heavily subsidised sugar – nearly three times the previous record in 2024 and seven times more than in 2020. This cheap, often dumped sugar displaces local sugar from retail shelves and food manufacturers. The industry supports more than one million livelihoods in KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga, but farmers are suffering from rising input costs, volatile markets, and a tax that further suppresses local demand. Since 2018, the tax has delivered no proven health benefits while costing more than 16,000 jobs in its first year alone.Oilseeds Season: Record Soybeans, Declining Sunflowers
The 2025/26 oilseeds season looks very promising for soybeans, with a record planting of 1,179,200 hectares. The crop performs better in wet, extreme conditions (such as La Niña), is more affordable than maize, and farmers can retain and replant their own seed. The harvest appears strong and above average, but a large surplus could push prices down to export parity levels. Farmers are advised not to sell everything at harvest time but to wait for better market conditions.Sunflower plantings are expected to drop to 531,100 hectares due to severe Sclerotinia damage in previous seasons. This is ironic, as South Africa remains a net importer of sunflower oil and local demand is strong. Groundnut plantings are also down (by 12.2%), but producers believe the final harvest could exceed forecasts.AGOA Renewal: Critical Week for Exports
Talks on renewing the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) resume in Washington this week. South Africa is pushing hard to remain fully included. The United States is a strategic, high-value market (about 4% of total agricultural exports in 2024, worth US$13.7 billion). Exports to the U.S. were robust in the first half of 2025 (with a 26% increase in the second quarter), but cooled in the third. Key products such as citrus, wine, fruit juices, and nuts would benefit greatly from a successful renewal with low or no tariffs.Political Vigilance Required
The ANC continues to push for radical economic transformation in agriculture, including stronger B-BBEE/AgriBEE requirements and the possibility of land expropriation without compensation – despite the current Government of National Unity (GNU). Farmers and organisations must remain vigilant to protect policy certainty, property rights, and market access. In Summary
South African agriculture shows world-class resilience but is under pressure from import competition (sugar), diseases, low prices, and policy uncertainty. The urgent calls to scrap the sugar tax, smart marketing of oilseeds, and a successful AGOA renewal are now critical to safeguard thousands of jobs, rural economies, and food security. The sector deserves full support – it remains the backbone of the country’s economy and food supply. Foot-and-mouth disease must be declared a national disaster. To save the livestock industry, regulations must be amended to shift pressure away from the state which has failed dismally in its responsibilities to the private sector and to farmers themselves.Since Minister Steenhuisen’s announcement in November 2025 that all cattle (approximately 14 million) would be vaccinated, pigs and calves have begun dying from the disease. The dairy, red meat and stud livestock industries have been plunged into an existential crisis, and the Department of Agriculture, which is legally mandated to control and manage the disease, has largely lost the trust of farmers.

Farmers are being forced to reconsider their operations due to several problems, including labor scarcity, unpredictable weather patterns, disruptions in input supply, and the need to produce more with fewer resources. The difficulties of contemporary agriculture cannot be handled by traditional methods alone. READ MORE
Few things are as urgent for the South African cattle industry as the need to vaccinate the cattle herd against foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). While most of the country enjoyed December holidays, cattle farmers continued to experience major financial losses as FMD spread across various parts of the country. Numerous auctions were cancelled as farmers tried to limit the spread of the disease, but this has led to significant financial losses for the cattle industry. READ MORE

As mounting calls from farmers urge the declaration of the ongoing foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak as a national disaster, the Southern African Agri Initiative (Saai), an agricultural interest network for farmers by farmers, insists that the financial survival of family farmers must remain at the heart of all efforts to combat the disease and mitigate its severe economic impact on the livestock sector.
South Africa’s agricultural exports would have exceeded US$13.7 billion in 2024 and possibly crossed US$14 billion. The volumes of exports and prices were generally healthy. Red meat exports took a knock due to foot-and-mouth disease.

South Africa needs to urgently embark on an aggressive vaccination strategy to curb and potentially eradicate foot-and-mouth (FMD) disease through a concerted effort that includes logistics and allowing farmers to do it themselves.
The 2025-26 winter wheat harvest (planted May 2025, harvested late 2025) is nearing completion. Farmers have delivered ~1.58 million tonnes to commercial silos in the first 14 weeks of the marketing year —
