AgriSA CEO Johann Kotzé said that other trade agreements, particularly with BRICS partners, are not that beneficial as yet, with these high tariffs needing to be addressed. South African temporary farm workers are popular in the US. In the past year, almost 15 160 South Africans worked in the US as part of the so-called H-2A temporary agricultural worker visa programme, which allows US employers in the farming sector to bring foreign workers to the country for seasonal or temporary labour. This was almost 20% more than in the previous year. South Africans are the now biggest national group to receive these work visas, after Mexico. But Kotzé told an agricultural trade event in Cape Town on Thursday last week that it was clear that SA farmers would not emigrate to the US, despite the invitations from the White House. He said: "As farmers, we see a world where changes are going to happen. But I see a world of farmers who are not going to emigrate to the Americas. Why? Because of who we are. I see great and world-class industries. Twenty to 30 years from now, South Africans will be working together."
Donald Trump's administration is currently cutting regulations, but Joe Biden's influence lingers on. Biden set in motion a plan to force nutritional labels on every one of the 350,000 wines on the US market, and that plan is spinning forward. It's possible that the standard Nutrition Facts label that graces your breakfast cereal will also soon be found on your Montrachet, and you will learn that Burgundy – like every other wine – contains no fat and little or no protein. As for carbohydrates, wine contains a little, usually less than 4 grams per glass, while beer contains 10-15. That's not nothing, but it's also not a problem level: orange juice contains about 27 grams per serving, according to the USDA, while lemonade contains 34 grams and carbonated sodas contain 40 grams.

Since the arrival of Jan van Riebeeck and the Dutch East India Company in 1652 on the shores of Southern Africa, the story of South Africa has been one of land, conquest, and capital. The first wars of dispossession began with the violent subjugation of the Khoi-San, their ancestral land carved up for Dutch settlers who spread inland, waging battles of expansion. READ MORE
Without proper policy engagement of this challenge, the sector faces the risk of more waves of misconceptions about its export-driven growth drive while many South Africans are impoverished. We believe that an accurate diagnosis of the problem and its underlying causes is critical to formulating a suitable policy response. READ MORE
The hardest hit province continues to be KwaZulu-Natal that lost 232 rhinos; however, this is a notable decline from the 325 that were lost in 2023. The significant reduction can largely be attributed to the Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife Dehorning Programme, that was implemented in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park from April to October 2024. READ MORE

Farming isn’t your typical 9-to-5 gig. It’s a lifestyle that demands early mornings, late nights, and plenty of time operating machinery or walking the land. That’s where Audiocast shine. They’re hands-free, portable, and don’t care if you’re covered in dirt or steering through a muddy field. Unlike a book or a video, a Audiocast doesn’t ask you to stop what you’re doing—it joins you in the cab, the shed, or wherever the day takes you. And farmers are listening. Surveys suggest that a significant chunk of the agricultural community—some estimates say over a third—tune into ag-related podcasts regularly. Whether it’s catching up on market trends, learning about the latest in soil health, or just hearing a good story from another grower, these audio shows have become a go-to resource.
15 Best South Africa News Podcasts
AGRI NEWS NET on NUMBER 7 for the month of February 2025
The numbers tell the story: Audiocast listenership is climbing, and agriculture is no exception. By some estimates, over 100 million people in the U.S. alone are tuning into podcasts, with farmers and ranchers making up a dedicated slice of that pie. Successful ag-focused shows are racking up thousands of downloads per episode, and some are even attracting sponsors eager to reach this engaged audience.
As U.S. President Donald Trump intensifies calls for South African farmers to relocate to the U.S., offering them a rapid pathway to citizenship amid false claims of land confiscation in South Africa, local agricultural leaders are raising concerns.
South Africa’s total and agriculture exports were stagnant between the fourth quarters of 2023 and 2024. Imports on the other hand were mixed as the total decreased and those of agriculture increased by 13%. This led to a slight improvement in the national trade surplus and a reduction in the sectorbalance.
Here's a summary of the key points from the weather forecast for South Africa between March and July 2025, as provided by Cobus Olivier, a prediction research scientist at the South African Weather Service:
A RaboResearch report warns that proposed 25% U.S. tariffs on European Union (EU) exports could significantly disrupt the food and agriculture sector. The EU, which maintains a substantial trade surplus with the U.S. (€38 billion in exports vs. €14 billion in imports in 2024), relies on the U.S. as a key export market for high-value goods like wine, olive oil, dairy, and essential oils,
Transforming arid soil to enhance organic matter content is a gradual process that demands dedication and time. The pace of organic matter enrichment is influenced by various factors such as initial soil quality, climate, and farming techniques.
According to market research firm MarketsandMarkets, the global farm equipment market is bound to grow from $39.95 billion in 2025 to $52.79 billion by 2032, at a CAGR of 4.1%.
The signing of the Expropriation Act continues to cause shockwaves and intense reactions in South Africa. However, an analysis shows that over 84% of the land reform target has already been achieved—more than is generally acknowledged. Rash actions now would play into the hands of leftist factions.
