According to the World Wide Fund for Nature, wildfires globally have destroyed millions of hectares of forest, with recovery often taking decades. In South Africa, trials of drone-seeding technology began as early as 2019, with AirSeed Technologies planting 10,000 seed pods across 10 hectares in an initial test. These efforts are now expanding to address the urgent need for reforestation in fire-affected regions, such as those in the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, where natural revegetation is hindered by invasive weeds and degraded soil.
The speed and cost-effectiveness of drone seeding—up to 25 times faster and 80% cheaper than manual planting—make it a game-changer for South Africa’s restoration efforts. Traditional methods, which involve labor-intensive nursery cultivation and hand-planting, are slow and costly, with an average tree planting cost of R30 in South Africa. Drones reduce this cost by as much as 70%, making large-scale reforestation more feasible.

Germination rates can be low, with trials like the UK’s Woodland Trust “Sky Seeding” project targeting a 25% seed-to-tree success rate.
